The Second World War Essay Example For Students

The Second World War Essay John Boynton Priestley, a well known essayist, was conceived in Bradford, Yorkshire, on the thirteenth of September 1894. At the point when he was 16, Priestley chose to leave school through and through, accepting that the World outside homerooms and labs would improve his capacity to compose, and help him to turn into an essayist. J. B Priestleys convictions were that individuals ought to be dealt with also, and not distinctive in any capacity whatsoever. He had faith in social obligation and participation between individuals of various classes. An Inspector Calls was written in 1945, the year that saw the finish of the Second World War. Priestley felt this was the ideal time to present this novel, since society needed rearranging and recuperating from the ongoing war. Everything should have been worked into a new beginning. The explanation Priestley utilizes emotional gadgets so right off the bat in the play is to keep the crowd snared and intrigued. On the off chance that the crowd is exhausted toward the beginning of a play, they will start to lose intrigue. Sensational gadgets work a similar way that water does with plants; it assimilates the crowd and makes them excited for additional. The play starts with various explicit stage bearings. We will compose a custom article on The Second World War explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now This is with the goal that all executives translations of the underlying scene will be comparable and practically exact to how Priestley trusts it ought to be. It is likewise significant that he is unmistakable, with the goal that executives can likewise see how the character submits their activities, precisely how each character should look, and how each character by and large carries on. Priestley is additionally exceptionally nitty gritty on the grounds that he wishes to make a specific tone. The setting of the opening of the play is the lounge area of a genuinely enormous rural house, and that it has a place with a prosperous maker. We would already be able to figure from this sentence the proprietor of this house is certainly rich and possesses this house is some acceptable rural areas. This initial sentence as of now attracts the peruser, as they need to find out about the proprietor of this house. The explanation Priestley uses such a recognizable setting is with the goal that chiefs will have a perception of what the house resembles. Anything extravagant or difficult to envision would be hard for a play to make, so keeping the setting recognizable makes things simpler and less difficult. In the primary Act, the air is happy and brimming with cheer, and the purpose behind this is on the grounds that the family is getting a charge out of a decent supper, and are praising an extraordinary event. This is profoundly amusing when we consider the remainder of the play as their positive states of mind are unexpectedly muffled by blame. The Inspector shows up and educates them regarding a young lady Eva Smith, who has quite recently died because of a huge portion of disinfectant. From hearing the news, the family gets stunned. Priestley composed this play to investigate communism and participating to make the poor more extravagant. He takes a gander at the issues of social class and duty through his characters by giving them every single unmistakable character; Mr. Birling is a somewhat ominous man, who is depicted to be in his fifties. This discloses to us that Arthur Birling has a self important nature which bolsters the thoughts that he is rich. Mr. Birling is a genuine case of riches, or maybe eagerness, which are two angles we can find from him. He has faith in Capitalism, and leaving the individuals who cannot take care of themselves in the soil. J. B. Priestley has utilized this character to enhance fortune and riches, yet when the Inspector shows up out of nowhere at his front entryway and uncovers Evas awful demise, the entire family starts to feel an indisputable sentiment of blame, and the reviewer says every one of them assisted with killing her. Mr. Birling is portrayed as an overwhelming looking man, furnished with genuinely simple habits, yet is very common in his discourse. Mrs. Birling is a somewhat cool lady and is supposed to be her spouses social prevalent. This implies she is a significant aloof and saved lady, which is a comparable character to her spouses. .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 , .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 .postImageUrl , .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 .focused content region { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 , .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275:hover , .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275:visited , .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275:active { border:0!important; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; change: mistiness 250ms; webkit-progress: murkiness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275:active , .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275:hover { obscurity: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 .focused content region { width: 100%; position: relativ e; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: striking; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content adornment: underline; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; text style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; outskirt sweep: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: intense; line-tallness: 26px; moz-outskirt range: 3px; content adjust: focus; content beautification: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-stature: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u2c32808c c7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275 .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u2c32808cc7e5cb61b7df04cd23457275:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: blacks in common war EssayFrom this depiction we can tell that its reasonable she wont think about Evas demise. Both the Birling grown-ups have a narrow minded confidence in the public eye, and dont care as long as theyre glad. The two of them have industrialist sees upon life, and want to take care of themselves as opposed to support the general network. Priestley keenly utilizes emotional incongruity in this play to make Birling look dumb, as he makes reference to that he can't help contradicting a few people who state War is inescapable, saying its all fiddlesticks.

Apocalypse Now vs Heart of Darkness Essay - 1120 Words

Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now lacks the impact of its inspiration, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. While the basic elements of imperialism and human nature remain intact, the characters of the film bare little resemblance to their literary counterparts. The film serves as a re-interpretation of Conrad’s novella, updated from 19th-century British imperialism in the Congo to a critique of 20th-century U.S. imperialism in Southeast Asia. Coppola’s changes in setting and plot structure, however, force the film to sacrifice the character development so crucial in the literary work. This detracts from the overall effectiveness of the film. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; The most important difference between novella and film is the†¦show more content†¦military. This type of moral direction deprives the viewer of the forced introspection created by the novella. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; The film also depicts the character of Kurtz in a very different light. Conrad builds up the appearance of Kurtz so much that his first scene is intentionally anti-climactic. He is discovered to be an ailing, elderly gentlemen, malnourished and on the verge of death. Marlow himself is simultaneously impressed with and disappointed by Kurtz. He enjoys listening to the old man’s philosophies, but he is let down by Kurtz’s lack of realistic thinking. He has clearly lost his mind, and with it, some of his credibility and mysticism. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; The character of Kurtz in Apocalypse Now, however, is never de-humanized as it is in Heart of Darkness. Coppola’s casting of Marlon Brando as the eccentric army major forced Kurtz’s character to take on the burden of Brando’s infamous weight problems. As a result, Kurtz was transformed from an emaciated, sickly old man to a powerful, overweight, middle-aged soldier. This transformation has been noted by many critics, most significantly Roger Ebert, who stated in a review of the recently re-released Apocalypse Now, â€Å"In the film, Kurtz is portrayed by Marlon Brando, the father of American method actors, who lends weight (both physically and dramatically) to the figure of the megalomaniacal Kurtz. Social and Environmental Accounting Research

Question: Discuss about the Social and Environmental Accounting Research. Answer: Introduction The primary aim of this study is to critically analyze the research article prepared by Paul V. Dunmore on the topic of Half a Defence of Positive Accounting Research. This particular article is focused on the research on positive accounting. The primary argument made by Paul V. Dunmore in the article is that the positive accounting theory is a broader concept than just a particular theory of accounting. The analysis of the article is focused on identifying whether the main argument of the author has clear significance in this current situation or not. At the same time, identifying the limitations of the article is another goal of this study. Summary of the article As stated above, in the article is focused on the positive accounting. During this research, the author has indicated that positive theory of accounting and positive researches are different from each other (Chiapello 2016). The author has argued that in todays context, most of the accounting researches are not positive accounting research. According to the author of the article, a research can be considered as the positive research, when it is done through proper observation and testing the theories (Dunmore 2011). However, in current accounting researches, most of the time researchers avoid observations and theory testing, which is the main reason behind the falsification of accounting researches. In order to clear out the meaning of positive research, the author has described the concept of normal science stated by Kuhn (Dunmore 2011). At the same time, the author has also described the positive accounting research as an intellectual project, which is based on science that suggests identifying the cause-effect relationships between the research variables (Gow, Larcker and Reiss 2016). Therefore, it can be said that in this article, the author has tried to clear out the concept of positive accounting and positive research through proper justification. However, the theories analyzed and described in this research article have helped in understanding the differences between the current positive accounting research and actual positive accounting researches (Ball 2015). The theories have cleared out the problem areas in the current accounting researches. Moreover, the theories in the research have also cleared out the knowledge about the scientific epistemology and ontology (Dunmo re 2011). Research questions In this research article, the author has set mainly four hypotheses on the basis of the literature of the study. In these hypotheses, the author has assumed that there is a world, which is beyond the reach of human beings and so the human beings can understand the events in that world by observing the same (Dunmore 2011). The four hypotheses in this article are based on the literature of positive theory or positive research. The hypotheses are focused on observation during the positive research, which has also been identified in the literature review of the study (Granlund and Lukka 2016). These four hypotheses have provided the author the scope and direction to research on the subject of positive research on accounting. Moreover, the hypotheses of the article have also influenced the author to research on the loopholes in the current positive accounting research practices (Tucker, Parker and Merchant 2016). On the other side, as the hypotheses in the research article has emphasized on the observation, the researcher has also influenced towards the identification of importance of proper observation during research (Mora and Walker 2015). Noticing the hypotheses of the research article, it can be easily understood that each of the research hypothesis is derived from the literature or the theoretical framework of the study (Everett et al. 2015). In the literature study or the theoretical framework, the article has identified the actual concept of positive research and scientific ontology and epistemology, on the basis of which, the hypotheses of the study are developed, so that the existing theories can be tested properly (Barth 2015). At the same time, the theoretical knowledge or concept on scientific ontology and epistemology has influenced the researcher or the author setting the hypotheses that influence to focus on the reality or real observation of the human behavior (Halliwell 2015 ). Therefore, it can be said that the theoretical framework or the literature of the article has stated about the concepts on positive research and scientific ontology and epistemology, from which the research set the hypotheses for getting better knowledge on the research subject area. Theoretical framework The theoretical framework of this research article has started with the discussion and evaluation of the positive accounting theory. The research has mainly focused on the agency theory in the area of accounting (Dunmore 2011). During the review of the literature, the author has identified that in a business organization, the relationship between the principal and the agent is high dependent on the proper observation. The principal or the shareholders and investors of an organization observe the performance of the agents or the management and employees before taking any decision (Leone, Minutti-Meza and Wasley 2015). On the other side, the management or the agent observes the decisions or the steps taken by the principles in order to understand the future of the organization. Therefore, the relationship between the two parties that are agent and principal is based on proper observation (Granlund and Lukka 2016). Therefore, research on the organizations or accounting research in the o rganization must be done through proper observation, which is also suggested by the positive research concept. On the other side, while discussing on the concept of positive accounting research, the author has identified that positive accounting research and positive researches are different (Dunmore 2011). The literature in the study has advised that in a positive research, there must be rational investigation or enquiry. However, in the early days or in the current era also the researchers avoid rational investigation (Gow, Larcker and Reiss 2016). In the past days, the people used to consider each event in the world happens due to the influence of any unworldly power like, God or Spirit (Dunmore 2011). The people used to believe this because they never observed the actual or real things and they did not even analyzed or tested the old theories. The same thing also takes place in todays context. In the literature framework, the article has identified some of the examples of positive theory, like, stakeholder theory and legitimacy theory (Dunmore 2011). However, it has also been identified t hat the positive theory of accounting is focused on the relationship between the people who use the resources of the organization (Leone, Minutti-Meza and Wasley 2015). Moreover, the literature study has indicated that most of the researches that are known as the positive researches are biased. The concept of positive accounting research in the literature or theoretical framework of the study has clearly mentioned that positive accounting research means the research on the human behavior within the accounting setting (Dunmore 2011). At the same time, the literature review of the article has also identified that positive research can be done qualitatively. Many people in the field of research believe that the positive research can only be done in quantitative manner (Gow, Larcker and Reiss 2016). However, the literature has shown that there are many areas of science that are related to the positive research are qualitative in nature, for example, the positive research on geology, botany and zoology. Moreover, the literature has also cleared out that positive research and the quantitative researches are not same (Dunmore 2011). While identifying the reasons behind the biasness in the positive accounting research, the literature of the article has indicated several reasons. One of the most vital reasons is the weak hypotheses testing. The author has identified that in most of the accounting researches, the hypotheses testing is done in quantitative manner and at the same time, there are some error in the measurement in the research (Everett et al. 2015). Moreover, the procedure of positive accounting research is also not followed properly in the existing positive accounting research. The procedure must be start with the development of preliminary ideas through careful observation, after that the next step is development of testable hypotheses and lastly testing the existing theories (Leone, Minutti-Meza and Wasley 2015). The concepts of scientific epistemology and ontology have clearly indicated that every positive research and positive accounting research must be done on the basis of the reality. Therefore, from the above discussion, it can be said that the theoretical framework of this article is much clear and provides the clear view of the concepts of positive research and positive accounting research. At the same time, the review of the literature has also cleared about the biasness in the current and past positive accounting researches. Moreover, the author has clarified that positive accounting research is not like a theory. The significance and limitations of the article This particular article is very important in the current field of research. In this article, the researcher or the author has clearly mentioned the meaning of positive research. This helps understanding the problems in the previous researches so that the researches in the future days the positive accounting researches can be done properly (Granlund and Lukka 2016). Apart from that, the article has also cleared out the way through which the people or the researchers can test the existing theories so that the purpose of the research can be achieved properly. However, the main limitation of this study is in the methodology of the research. The research in this article is done based on the exploratory research design. Exploratory research design is very critical to implement. On the other side, exploratory research design requires much quantitative data in order to analyze and test the theories (Tucker, Parker and Merchant 2016). However, the researcher has not utilized enough quantitative data and information in order to test the theories and hypotheses. It could have been a proper research if the research could include the quantitative analysis along with the qualitative analysis (Everett et al. 2015). Another limitation of the study is that the study is solely dependent on the qualitative research, which means the chances of biasness are high in this research. Moreover, the research has lack of proper evidences to support the argument in the study. However, the conclusion of the study has been identified with the help of detailed observation and measurement of the theories. The author of this research article has also tested the theories and the hypotheses through proper observation, which indicates that the conclusion of the study has been justified by the methodology of it (Halliwell 2015). Though the researcher could have done the study more easily if the descriptive research design along with the positivism theory is followed. Therefore, it can be said that though the research article has cleared out the concept of positive accounting research, there are some limitations, which have reduced utility of the research. Conclusion In this critical review of the research article, it has been seen that the research article is very helpful in understanding the actual meaning of positive research. At the same time, the study or the research has also indicated clearly the difference between the positive research and the positive accounting research. The author of this article has mentioned that the agency theory of accounting has been derived through the positivism or positive accounting research. At the same time, in the critical review, it has been identified that the positive accounting research actually indicates the behavior of the human beings in a particular accounting setting. The critical review has indicated that the article has identified properly the reasons behind the biasness in the positive accounting research. The positive accounting researches in the past days were not developed through proper observation and theory testing, which are the main reasons behind the biasness in the research. At the same time, avoiding the qualitative research in positive accounting researches is another reason behind the biasness. However, in the critical review, it has also been identified that the article has some limitations due to the use of exploratory research methodology because this method is much critical. Smokings Ethical Problem

Smoking is a habit developed by most people but the problem with it, just like any other drug, is addiction. Consequently, people addicted to smoking find it difficult to go for long periods without smoking. This has led to people smoking everywhere; public areas such as buses, restaurants and workplaces.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Smoking’s Ethical Problem specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More For non-smokers, this habit is extremely irritating and can lead to health problems associated with passive smoke. As a result, a convenient prohibition should be implemented to place both smokers and non-smokers in a suitable position where none is bothered by the other. It is quite unethical to allow smoking to continue in workplaces at the expense of the non-smokers. This paper intends to focus on convenient policies that could be implemented at workplaces that would be favorable to both smokers and non-smokers. Renfold as a supervisor is approached by an employee who complains about the smoking habits of other employees in the workplace. The complaint raised by Darlene is that Alice and Frank smoke in their offices and the stench of cigarette smoke that remains in the air irritates her. If I were Charles Renfold I would listen to Darlene’s complaint and look at the situation objectively before taking any action. Darlene is of the opinion that she would not work on the job that is assigned to her since she needs to retrieve files from Alice’s and Frank’s office. Since the job is urgent and therefore needed in a few days time, I would request her to work on the job with the promise that I will communicate her complaints to Frank and Alice so that they may stop smoking in the office due to complaints raised by fellow colleagues. Furthermore, I will promise her that I would forward the complaint to the human resource manager so that they could formulate company rules that would favor both smokers and non-smokers within the organization without affecting employees output and morale. After my encounter with Darlene, I would then visit Alice and Frank’s office to inform them of the complaints without necessarily revealing who the complainant is so that they may not develop feelings of resentment towards Darlene. I would then make a follow up with Darlene to ensure that she begins working on the files since the report is required by top management.Advertising Looking for report on labor law? There are several policies that can be formulated to ensure that smoking within the offices is regulated. Since the three parties are workers within the organization, I will have to come up with a strategic policy which will be suitable to both the smokers and the non-smokers. As smoking within the offices is the problem, I would recommend that smokers be allowed some amount of time during their working hours to smoke. The smoking would not take place within the building but there would be designated spots reserved for the smokers so that the smoke would not reach the non-smokers who are allergic or irritated by the smell of cigarette smoke (Office control, 2011, par. 7). To ensure that the smokers respond to the new smoking rules, I would ensure that there was a penalty which would be charged on an employee who is found smoking in an area other than the one reserved for smoking. If this policy is assimilated and implemented by Redwood Associates, then both the smokers and the non-smokers would be satisfied. The smokers could smoke more freely at their own pleasure while the non-smokers would be free from the irritating cigarette smoke. Smoking is a personal choice and ind ividuals who decide to smoke do so out of their own personal choice but this can be regulated so that smoking can take place in an area that is convenient for both parties. But there are other issues that are more personal such as perfumes and body odor and addressing such matters requires a lot of delicacy and much care has to be taken without raising remorseful feelings and resentment.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Smoking’s Ethical Problem specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More If Darlene was offended by Frank’s body odor, then Renfold would have to approach the issue more tactfully and in a professional manner to avoid lowering Frank’s morale and creating self-esteem problems that are likely to affect his attitude towards work and his colleagues. Renfold would have to approach Frank and request that they have a private talk since such messages cannot be passed on before the other employees. Renfold would have to engage in a personal talk with Frank making sure that he is straightforward in speech and that he arrives to the point he wants to put across quickly without beating around the bush since this creates an uncomfortable situation for both of them especially Frank. Before telling Frank about the issue, Renfold should make a point of informing Frank that the conversation is not related to work performance so that he can put Frank at ease and also to prepare him mentally for what he is about to say. Renfold could go ahead to advice Frank on possible solutions to the problem. Afterwards, he could make a follow up of the issue to find out whether there are improvements. As for Alice’s perfume, Renfold can also talk to her about it in a private conversation. He could request her to use little amounts since it is causing irritation to other employees or to change the product she is using. However, this is quite a personal matter since there is little that could be done about a persons taste for different cosmetic products. In fact, asking her to change the product would make her change to a different one but the smell could still be offensive to Darlene, therefore, there is no real solution to such a problem.Advertising Looking for report on labor law? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Actually, there are areas that an employer has no right to intrude such as grooming since it’s governed by the rights of an employee to privacy (Weiss, 2009, p.363) Darlene would have to cope up with it since she does not work full time in Alice’s office. Other employees who have been restricted from smoking resolve to smoking in their cars at the parking lot. Some companies have gone ahead and raised a ban on this habit. According to me, this is justifiable since a parking lot is part of the areas owned by the business and if it is not reserved as a site for smoking, there is no reason why an employee should smoke there. Other employees who are allergic to cigarette smoke use the parking lot just as the smokers do. Employees remain allergic whether the smoke is present in the offices or in the parking lot, it is still irritating and banning the smoking of cigarettes in the parking lot is justifiable and reasonable. In fact banning cigarette smoking to reserved sites c an eventually help these smokers to reduce their cigarette consumption thus killing the addiction (Archie Buchholtz, 2008, p.715). Smoking is an addictive habit developed by many people and the problem is experienced in work places. Some cigarette addicts go to the extent of smoking at workplaces at the expense of other colleagues who might be allergic to the cigarette smoke. To put everyone at ease, institution policies that prohibit smoking in public areas were formulated. They allowed cigarette smokers the right to smoke at designated spots reserved for the activity. Other issues arise at work places such as offensive body odors and irritating perfumes. Such issues should be solved with much care since they involve intrusion into the private life of a colleague or employee. Smoking in parking lots should also be prohibited since this is a space that is shared by both smokers and the non-smokers. Reference List Archie, C Buchholtz, A. (2008).
